Spiral Galaxy in Triangulum, apparent size 70' x 41', visible in 7x50 binoculars. Large size and favorable inclination make it an excellent object for imaging and identifying galactic detail. M33 is one of the two most studied extragalactic objects. Loosely wound spiral arms can be traced to within 20” of the nucleus. Near the core are clouds of gas and dust. Within M33 there are 4 NGC objects, 10 IC objects, dozens of additional discernible H-II regions, 4 bright globular clusters and B324 the brightest individual star in M33 at about 16th mag. The brightest Cepheid variables are also visible in this image. M33 was first imaged in the 1890's. It figured prominently in the controversy over the island-universe theory in the early 20th century when photographs first revealed individual stars as early as 1910.

M33 in Hydrogen Alpha narrow band (wavelength 656.28 nm, deep red), 5 x 2 minutes. One of the 5 layers used in the color image above. H-II regions can be seen tracing the spiral arms. NGC 604 is above right of center. Low signal to noise is an effect of narrow band filtering.

Globular Clusters in M33 look point-like but they can be distinguished from stars since M33 is relatively near. The Point Spread Function of globular clusters in M33 should have a larger FWHM than stars in the same image. Globular Cluster C20 is relatively bright (V-mag=17.57) and isolated. Four 120 second exposures were stacked using averaging. Six stars near C20 were selected as comparison objects.

The stars have an average FWHM of 2.26" with a 0.04" standard deviation. The Globular Cluster C20 has a FWHM of 3.30", many standard deviations above the mean. From the surface plots below, the broader shape of C20 relative to stars can be seen. Star #1 and Star #6 are on the top row, C20 is on the second row.

Many Cepheid variable stars in M33 can be resolved in CCD images with amateur telescopes. Cepheid variables are listed in order of their discovery and cross referenced with identifiers in later studies. Most of the Cepheid variables listed are resolved in the image of M33 above.
